Talkeetna Bonspiel COVID Rules
curlAK and the Talkeetna Community put the community, our volunteer’s and participant’s health and safety as our number one priority. We ask that you put your biases with the pandemic aside and abide by the following rules:
- Do not come to the event if you are feeling ill. Please contact curlAK to fill your spot or team’s spot.
- Masks required around the rink and while playing
- Spectators may be asked to leave if space fills up and 6ft distance is not maintained
- Air high fives encouraged pre and post-game. NO handshakes.
- Teams/sweepers will stand on opposite sides of the curling sheet.
- Skips, please give a respectful space in the house. If the rock comes behind the T-line, move aside and allow the opposing skip access to the house.
- Sweeping with one or two sweepers is at the team’s discretion. (Please discuss amongst your teammates your comfort level)
- There will be spots on the ice for sweepers to stand while waiting for the opposing team.
- Rocks and brooms will be sanitized after every game / Only touch your two rocks during a game
- If you become ill during the event, please notify organizers ASAP and further action will be assessed.
Other COVID details to note:
- This is an outdoor event and we will be operating at half the capacity of Talkeetna’s guidelines.
- The sheets will have more space between them this year. In addition, there is a lot of extra space at the rink, please utilize it and remain respectful of those around you.
- This year, curlAK is not hosting events outside of curling at the rink or encouraging congregating of any kind.
- Please plan meals accordingly based on your draw(game) schedule.
- Prior to the event, if the bonspiel is canceled due to COVID, a full refund will be given. Teams will be notified at least one week in advance of cancelation.
- If a team or player becomes ill prior to the event, please notify the organizers and we will address a refund.

Talkeetna Inn Host Hotel Details
The Talkeetna Inn is located off of B street. A private road in the heart of Talkeetna, walking distance to downtown and breathtaking views of Mt. Denali. The hotel has outside private entrances to each room and keyless coded entry. The Talkeetna Inn generously supports curlAK by donating all their proceeds from the weekend to our mission. Restaurant & Bakery basically closed for the time being to the general public. The focus is now on overnight room guests and keeping swarms of people out of the building. I bake Ginger Molasses Cookies to place in rooms upon arrival. Breakfast is offered as an add-on and is Sourdough Hotcakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, reindeer link, orange juice and hot beverage (I can substitute tomato for meat). $18 for adults, $9 for kids. Guests and I text the evening before to determine time and guests are seated during staggered times and away from other guests who may be also having breakfast. (Breakfast capacity is five parties maximum) Each room has its own Coffee/Tea/Cocoa service right in the room and a guest fridge and microwave are now available for use.
All rooms now have private bathrooms. Still ‘down the hall’ but assigned to each room/cabin. There is no longer general public access to the building so there is no sharing with others not staying here.
Upstairs Suite. What was Room 3, Room 4 and Room 5 is now the Upstairs Suite. Larger families or a group traveling in their ‘bubble’ have the whole floor and that floor’s bathroom all to themselves.
Bright Side: Early Check-in and Late Check-out is A-OK! There is now a 24 hour buffer of vacancy for the rooms on either night of a reserved stay. This allows a deeper clean and a bit more time to air out the spaces. For this reason, guests arriving at 11am (as in, on the northbound train) will be able to get into their rooms right away. And, when they are waiting for the late afternoon train they can stay in their rooms right up until I drive them to the depot. Lodging is Self Check-in and Check-out. A key and instructions are left for each guest. Earlier in the day of check-in I text further instructions to the guest which then also allows them to text me directly.
So, we just became an excellent spot for small tour groups or large families traveling together…curling teams! The closed nature of the building allows for those type of groups to relax in their own spaces, have a couple of large common areas to be in, allow for family-style breakfast if indeed they are their own households, and yet still be right in the heart of ‘beautiful downtown Talkeetna.’
For guests who would like a completely autonomous experience, yet be close enough to the train station, airport and Main Street action, there is a ’sister’ property near the end of the Village Strip (and immediately behind the ice rink) that I also own an operate as a separate business: Trapper John’s Cabin & Cottages. Three out of the four spots have bathrooms and kitchens (the Garden Cottage has a ‘picnic support’ kitchen but no running water, and an outhouse). They are all adorable and well loved by those who stay. Depending on Roadhouse occupancy I’m often able to extend the offer of adding a Roadhouse breakfast onto a Trapper John’s guest stay.
